2008 Kindertransport

Faith is leaving home. Digging around in the attic she discovers the relics of a secret childhood which propels her into a vortex of accusation and despair. This multi-award winning play explores the unique relationship between mothers and daughters and the real cost of surviving a traumatic past. We follow the journey of Eva from her childhood in pre-war Germany, through adolescence and into motherhood: the impact of her being sent as a child by her Jewish parents, in desperation for her protection, to a foreign country.  This touching play shifts seamlessly between what is remembered and what is forgotten as one child's journey into a new identity unfolds. And on that journey characters from her life, both living and dead, return to haunt her. Kindertransport is not only a story of pre-war "kinder", it has resounding echoes to our own stolen generation: the separation of mother from child, and relates to what many refugees and asylum seekers are experiencing today. For anyone who is a mother, daughter, migrant or survivor this complex, poignant play will touch you in places you didn't know you had.

“ Inventive Play Conjures Unwelcome Ghosts of the Holocaust”

“...This is a striking and visually innovative production. It combines puppetry, physical theatre and multimedia to evoke Samuels’ central concern: how the past haunts the present... Director, Megan Jones, has done an excellent job of marshalling non-naturalistic devices – from the intricate cardboard set to the nightmarish version of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.”
